Cross Channel Balloon Flight 2011

Posted by on April 9, 2011

At dawn on Thursday 50 balloons made their epic journey across the English Channel and flew over the port of Calais.  The event had been long in the planning with us all being on standby since mid-summer 2010.  We made our journey to Dover in the early hours of Thursday morning to prepare for the great adventure – not to mention World record Attempt!

The air was fresh, the sea calm and a couple of thousand feet above 50 balloons serenely flew over the busy shipping channel.  With crew wrapped up in immersion suits the flight had a somewhat different air about it.  The challenge had been a life-long ambition for Pilot Russell Collins who says, “It was a truly exhilarating and awesome experience.”

The event made national news, with the BBC airing every 30 mins with the morning weather.  We are just amazed at the wonderful organisation and preperation that has taken place for this to happen.  High Road Balloons are thrilled to have been part of the mass accent: which has been a magnificent way to head this beautiful weather we are basking in.

Well done High Road Balloons’ Team, another very successful achievement.
